Captain Mary thought I was ready for a stage ride with Captain Mike. For some reason, I was more nervous about this lesson than previous ones. Captain Mike is very laid back and knowledgeable so it wasn’t him that made me nervous. I think it was due to it feeling like a test instead of just learning.
Leaf On The Wind Watch How I Soar
I hoped that when we got in the plane the nerves would settle, but they didn’t. I taxied out to the run-up location and went through the checklist. We then talked about what we would be doing for the lesson. I began to taxi out and headed down the runway. I lifted off and started to climb, then banked Northwest to head to the training area. I told Mike that I was going to level off at 2400ft. Once I got up there, I ended up trimming out at 2500 and was ok with that. Mike pointed out that if I target 2400 then that is where I should trim out. It made perfect sense.
I then went through a couple of Steep Turns (45 degrees). I was within limits, but I know I can do better on my altitude control with these. Mike gave me a couple of tips regarding my horizon that I think will be very useful for my next ones. We then went into both power-off stalls and power-on stalls. My power-off stall went smooth, but I had never done a power-on stall as we were interrupted by traffic on my last lesson. Mike showed me one and I then performed my own. I was not happy with my rudder work on the first approach to stall and I aborted by leveling out then again went into the stall. It went smooth and I was happy with it.
Mike then showed me what it was like to have an extreme stall. He literally put the plane into a stall that lasted more than 10 seconds as he was talking to me showing me how little work he had to do because the plane was so stable. We did drop a fair amount of altitude, but the plane never seemed to want to become unstable. Other than the wing flutters from the stall, and the altitude dropping like it did, it was incredibly solid and didn’t freak me out. It was incredible!
We then set a course to go find our home airport. I had a little difficulty picking up the airport on the way back, but I did find it and brought us back home. Due to traffic in the pattern Mike took over and did a quick approach and an abbreviated pattern to get us on the ground. I was short on time as I had to get to work.
I know I have a lot to learn and I know I can do better than I did today, but I wasn’t disappointed because I did everything thing I was asked to do and did it all within the limits of passable. I am making progress and things will continue to get better as I continue to learn. I was very happy that my radio work today was a big improvement over previous attempts and I felt confident in my communications with Norcal Approach. It was a good day and another step in the process. This journey is incredible and I am getting better and better with each lesson.
