The WPS GHA Portal should also work with other Internet browsers (such as Firefox, Chrome, and Safari); however, WPS GHA does not guarantee their compatibility with the WPS GHA Portal. The WPS GHA Portal automatically logs out users after 15 minutes of inactivity.

Many wireless routers come with the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) feature.

For many of us who find it easy configuring a wireless router, it is common to encounter the WPS button or icon alongside connectivity ports at the back side of your router, and wonder what its value is to the router.

So, what is WPS?

WPS is a network authorization system that is easy and secure. When you want to connect to a wireless router, whether on a smartphone, tablet, desktop, or any other device, the process is usually the same. You have to select the network and enter a password for it before connecting to the network.

WPS allows you to make a quick connection to the network without inputting the password. It applies to systems that are already password protected and the password is scrambled with WPA or WPA2 security protocols.

If your router’s password is under WEP security, it’s high time you change that. WEP is outdated and is easily hackable. On that note, WPS will not work with WEP password protected routers.

Why was WPS Invented?

In 2006, Wi-Fi Alliance introduced WPS which was originally known as Wi-Fi Simple Config. It was created to help home users who know less about technology or are afraid to set up wireless passwords use Wi-Fi without compromising their network security.

Activating WPS

It can be an automatic process after you configure the router or you can press the WPS button on the router. If the router does not have a button, you need to access the router’s admin user interface to enable WPS. The other option entails using PIN entry which we’ll cover below.

How to Use WPS

Find the WPS Button or Icon on your Router

Turn WPS on using one of the activation methods to make it discoverable on other devices. It allows you to make a quick connection on other devices.

Using WPS on different Devices

On printers

Wps shortcut

Most printers have a WPS button that allows it to connect to a wireless router without going through a computer interface configuration. It is a matter of having the printer in range with the router and pressing the WPS button on the printer, and the WPS button on the router and the two devices will connect wirelessly.

For Android

Go to the Wi-Fi preferences screen on your Android. It comes after the available networks screen. If you don’t find it, scroll and tap action overflow and then choose the advanced option.

It should open the WPS Push Button as an option among Wi-Fi Preferences. Touching this option will provide a successful Wi-Fi connection within seconds as long as your device is in range with the router. This method will not require entering of passwords.

If your router does not have a button, select the WPS PIN Entry option. It will prompt you to enter an 8-digit pin. The Pin is found on the router’s admin page. It means you should have a laptop or another device where you can access the router’s admin page.

After the first successful connection, subsequent connections will not require re-entry of any pins as it will be automatic.

On Laptops and Desktops

Windows 10 is the easiest to connect to Wi-Fi using WPS.

Go to the available networks and open the Wi-Fi you want to connect to from the list of available networks. As soon as you choose the Wi-Fi network, it will prompt you to enter a password or connect using a push button on the router.

At this moment, press and hold the WPS button on the router for a couple of seconds. If the router lacks a WPS button, it will still connect automatically after a few seconds. It’s as easy as that.

Operating Systems that Support WPS

Apart from Windows 10, previous Windows versions including Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 support WPS. Also, Android which is the most used OS for smartphones supports WPS from version 4.1 released in 2011.

For iPhone and Mac users, you are not in luck because WPS is not supported on iOS and X operating systems.

In 2011, a significant security flaw that affects WPS with the PIN feature was discovered. Remote attackers could recover the WPS PIN generated by the router after a few hours using a brute attack. After this, the hacker can access the Password to your network and gain access to your Wi-Fi.

That’s why the push button method is advocated against the PIN entry method to reduce its vulnerability. You can turn off WPS if you fear a brute attack or you can choose to buy routers that have WPS buttons instead of those without.

Turning off WPS is not always an option on all routers.

What is WPA/WPA2 WiFi network?

WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) was the newer and secured security protocol for wireless network in replace to the older vulnerable WEP standard. It was initiated in 2003 just a year before WEP was retired. The main change that WPA brought was to include integrity check which determined if an attacker was altering internet packets between the user and the access point. Despite those improvement WPA was vulnerable which was exploited by lot of penetration testers. Although the exploit was not directly targeted towards the WPA algorithm but through Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) which made it possible to get into the Wi-Fi networks easily. But in 2006, WPA was officially replaced by WPA2. The main difference between these two networks was use of a new algorithm called AES. Even though it was much better than WPA network but the main vulnerability again struck via WPS exploit. In a normal way, WPA/WPA2 are the new Wi-Fi security protocol used in both home and enterprise wireless networks.

What is WPS?

Wi-Fi Protected Setup or WPS is a new method to connect wireless devices to the access points without physically entering the password. It was created by the Wi-Fi Alliance in 2006 to make it easy for the people who knew less about wireless network to connect devices to their existing network without using the long passwords. There are different method by which a device could be connect to the AP. The basic was a PIN method which works by entering the pin located on a sticker in the AP to the connecting device. Another one was a push button method where the user had to push a physical button on the Access point. Another two modes are near field communication and USB method which is used very rarely. But in 2011 a major security flaw affected all the wireless access point which used WPS Pin feature. The PIN was only 8 digits and divided into two parts while there was connection going on. This exploit allowed attacker to brute force every possible PIN in the WPA/WPA2 networks. This may take a long time but it was really successful. And in this tutorial we will see how does this work on real life.

Limitations:

  1. This works on WPA/WPA2 network.
  2. It will work on all the basic new routers and mostly all of the old routers.
  3. Not all networks can be hacked even if you satisfy the above 2 requirements because a small thing can alter the hack.

Requirement:

  1. Laptop or Desktop with Windows Operation System.
  2. Internal or External WiFi Adapter
  3. Wincap
  4. JumpStart
  5. Dumpper
  6. WPA/WPA2 WiFi network which you want to crack

Process:
Step 1: Download everything from the above link.
Step 2: Install WinPcap and JumpStart on your PC.

Step 3: Start Dumpper

  • Open Dumpper.exe from the folder
  • Go the “WPS” tab. Then click “Scan”. You will see a list of wireless network around you which have WPS enabled.
  • Now, click on the network which you want to crack and then click on JumpStart.
  • If you had successfully installed JumpStart then you will see a new dialogue box pop up which will try to connect to the targeted network using the default pin.
  • And if its successfully connected then you will see a dialogue box saying “Wireless Configuration Completed”. If you are lucky then you will be connected to the WiFi network.
  • And finally if you want to see the plain text password for that network then go the “Profiles” tab and select your targeted network and you will see the plain text password in the “Key” field.

So, you can see that it is really the simplest method to crack a WiFi network. Basically this software get the Access Point (Router) manufacturer data and tries to connect to the WiFi network using the default PIN used by the routers manufacturer. Unfortunately this is not available in android, iphone, iOS or Linux.
